RapidArc Begins Treatment on First U.S. Patient

This week, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System became the first medical center in the United States to begin treating cancer patients with RapidArc radiotherapy from Varian Medical Systems.

The patient, who was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, will be receiving daily treatments for four weeks.

The RapidArc has the ability to deliver advanced image-guided, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) two to eight times faster than is possible with conventional IMRT or helical tomotherapy.
