Many patients avoid their annual check ups or mammograms for a simple reason—they dislike the atmosphere of their doctor’s office.
The administrators of the Imaging Center for Women (ICW) in Fredericksburg, Va., took that into account when creating its female friendly facility. Located near Mary Washington Healthcare’s campus, the newly opened facility features a soothing environment designed especially for female patients. There are pressed wild flowers in an entry glass panel, wall colors are subdued, artistic paneling and carpeting, and wood trim create a relaxed environment. Multiple private reception areas are designed to eliminate long patient lines, and other hallmarks of the clinical environment have been eliminated, including charts and office clutter. Instead, patients will find spacious changing rooms with full-length mirrors and closet space for their belongings. These changing rooms open to extra-wide hallways where robe and towel-warming equipment are stationed.
By adding this level of comfort, the ICW, a partnership between Mary Washington Healthcare and Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg, hasn’t compromised its quality of care. Services include screening and diagnostic digital mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and biopsy, pelvic sonography, and bone densitometry. The center has been designed to accommodate growth and emerging technologies such as dedicated breast MRI and scintimammography as they become part of the standard menu of care.
The new center is the fulfillment of a nearly decade-old vision, said Ed Swager, CEO of Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg in an ICW press release. “This building was planned at every level of detail to ensure that it feels both spacious and private to our female patients who come in for screening,” he said. “It was designed from the ground up with a woman's comfort and her unique medical imaging needs in mind.”
