Modular Devices Comes to the Rescue with Mobile Cath Lab

There’s little argument that this year’s tornado season has been one of the worst in the nation’s history. What’s also not in doubt is that the country responded admirably in offering aid and support. One of the shining knights in the aftermath of the tornado that severely damaged St. John’s Hospital in Joplin, Mo., was Modular Devices Inc., which quickly responded by deploying a modular cath lab within weeks of the disaster, restoring the hospital’s ability to provide cardiac and vascular services.

The modular cath lab was set up just one week after the opening of a mobile field hospital. Within five days of its deployment, the lab performed its first cardiac procedures. When the hospital is relocated or rebuilt, the modular lab can be easily relocated to a more permanent structure or serve long term in its present configuration.

The modular cath lab layout is a “double-wide” modular building and includes a procedure room with over 550 square feet of space—similar in size to many in-house, permanent cath labs. The modular lab is equipped with a state-of-the-art GE Innova 4100 x-ray imaging system. The Innova 4100 includes a 40 cm digital flat detector and will allow St. John’s to perform a variety of procedures, including cardiac cath, peripheral vascular, implants, and cardiac and peripheral interventions.
